Early Literacy

A message from Children's Librarian, Maria Selak:

Early Literacy concerns what children know about reading and writing before they can actually read or write. The following links include websites with fun activities and facts about early literacy. You will find some pre-reading skills that your child can start learning from birth. Help your child become interested in and enjoy books and the library.

Happy reading!

Ready At Five. Tip sheets and activity calendar for parents to support early literacy.

Ready *Set* Read Activities. Explains what behaviors to expect from children (birth to age 5), how they learn, what children learn about language, and activities to enjoy with children at each age-level.

Reading Is Fundamental Ways for parents to build a child's early literacy skills. Good section on choosing good books, reading aloud and language-rich homes.
